Why We Stop (And How We Find Our Way Back)

Well… I disappeared for a couple of weeks.

I wish I had some exciting story about climbing a mountain or paddling fifty miles down a river, but the truth is a whole lot less exciting. Life happened. Work got busy, a few overwhelming things came up, my shoulder has been acting like it’s held together with bubble gum and duct tape, and my knee reminds me every morning that I’m pushing fifty whether I want to admit it or not. By the time I got home most days, I was just plain worn out.

And honestly, that’s exactly why I wanted to write this, because I don’t think I’m the only one. I think this is why so many of us stop. Not because we’re lazy, and not because we don’t care. Life just gets loud. When we’re tired, stressed, hurting, or overwhelmed, the first things to disappear are usually the things that help us the most. The workouts stop, the walks stop, and healthy meals slowly become whatever is quickest because, let’s be honest, who feels like cooking after a day like that?

Then our brain starts negotiating with us. Mine is really good at it.

“Well… if I can’t work out because of my shoulder and knee, I might as well eat whatever I want.”

It sounds completely reasonable in the moment, but it never works out that way. One meal turns into a weekend, a weekend turns into a couple of weeks, and before long I’m telling myself, “I’ll start Monday.” Funny how Monday somehow becomes next month, and then January ends up taking the blame for everything.

Before I know it, I’m sleeping more than I should, wandering into the kitchen every time I walk by it like there’s some magical snack fairy restocking the pantry, and wondering where all my motivation went. The truth is, motivation didn’t disappear. I just got tired. And when you’re tired, it’s easy to believe the lie that because you can’t do everything, you shouldn’t do anything.

I’ve been there more than once. Truth is… I’m there right now.

“When life gets loud, don’t wait for motivation. Just make the next good choice.”

My shoulder still hurts. My knee still hurts. Work is still exhausting, and life is still messy. None of that has changed. What has changed is that I’m tired of waiting for everything to line up perfectly before I get back on track. If I keep waiting for the perfect time, I’ll probably be waiting for the rest of my life.

So my plan isn’t complicated. I’m going to do one workout, eat one healthy meal, take one walk, and make one better choice than I made yesterday. Maybe my workout won’t look like it used to. Maybe I have to modify half the exercises, and maybe my walk is slower than it was a year ago. I honestly don’t care, because forward is still forward.

That’s really what BB Fitness & Adventures has always been about. Not six-pack abs. Not perfection. Just getting healthier so we can keep doing the things we love, whether that’s hiking a trail, riding a bike, loading up the kayak, exploring some little town we’ve never been to, or simply having enough energy to enjoy a Saturday without needing a nap halfway through it.

So no, this isn’t another “starting over” post. I’ve written enough of those. I’m just picking back up where I left off. And if you’ve found yourself in that same cycle, maybe it’s time to stop waiting for Monday too. Let’s just make the next good choice, then another one after that. Maybe that’s how we finally stop quitting on ourselves.

I’ll see you out there.
