Well, life has been kicking our butts for the last month or so. Beth has been fighting off an illness that’s left her feeling really sick and completely exhausted for the past three weeks. Somewhere along the way, I managed to hurt my shoulder too. My best guess? Lifting the garage door over and over while we were trying to get the HomeLink programmed in the Jeep. Trust me—that’s a story all by itself.
Between Beth not feeling well, my shoulder bothering me, working overtime, and just being worn out, neither of us has felt like doing much of anything.
We haven’t been eating the way we should.
We haven’t been exercising.
Honestly, we’ve just been tired.
Work hasn’t slowed down, either. I’ve still been putting in plenty of overtime and double shifts. Then add in several weeks of temperatures in the 90s, and it really starts to wear on you. It’s hard to get excited about going for a walk when you’re already exhausted from working all day in the heat.
A few days ago, I was standing in front of the mirror, and I realized I wasn’t happy with what I saw.
The belly is making a comeback.
Then I saw a picture of myself standing next to the Jeep, and it confirmed what I was already thinking. To top it off, my oldest grandson looked at me and said, “You have a big belly.”
Kids have a way of telling the truth, don’t they?
That was all the motivation I needed.
So today, we’re getting back to it.
Not on a Monday.
Not at the beginning of a new month.
Not waiting for the “perfect time.”
Just… today.
One thing we’ve been excited about through all of this is our upcoming trip to Michigan. We’ve spent the last few weeks planning where we’re going to kayak, places we want to explore, and some restaurants we’d like to try.
We’re still going to enjoy ourselves. That’s part of traveling.
But we’re also going to make better choices.
Instead of trying to perfectly follow a high-protein, lower-fat, lower-carb plan on vacation, we’re going to focus on balance. We’ll eat a sensible breakfast, pay attention to portions, and enjoy the local food without feeling like we have to overdo it.
We’ll also be staying active. Between walking, kayaking, riding bikes, and exploring new places, we’ll get plenty of movement in while making memories together.
And that’s really what this blog has become.
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about getting healthy enough to enjoy life.
Sometimes life gets in the way. People get sick. Work gets busy. Injuries happen. The important part isn’t that you never fall off track—it’s that you decide to get back on.
That’s where we are today.
Michigan is just around the corner, the kayaks are ready, and we’re looking forward to sharing our next adventure with all of you.
